More about Golf Clubs

Golf clubs are the tools with which you craft each round of golf, and they come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. By law of the USGA, you are allowed a maximum of 14 golf clubs in your bag for the duration of each round of golf, and these typically will include:

  • Driver- the longest golf club, both in size and distance that it send the golf ball. One of the most satisfying golf clubs to hit, but also one of the hardest. This golf club is usually only hit off the tee, although professionals may hit the golf ball from the ground on longer holes.
  • Fairway Woods - these golf clubs are smaller in length and headsize from the driver, and are designed to allow you to hit the golf ball a long distance from the fairway, although of course can be used off the tee. Because the shafts in these golf clubs are shorter than the drivers, they are usually easier to hit.
  • Hybrids - a real example of innovation making golf an more enjoyable game, these golf clubs combine the ease of hitting of a fairway wood with the accuracy of an iron. They replace the long to hit 1, 2, 3 and 4 irons and are perfect for those long approach shots.
  • Irons - these golf clubs are designed for accuracy. When you have somewhere around 200 yards and less to the hole, you will take an iron, usually with the intent of hitting the ball as close to the hole as possible. Most of these golf clubs feature a cavity back design to be more forgiving, although many pro's elect for blade designs - great if your golf swing is consistent and strong, but not so if you are a beginner or intermediate player, or hit the ball less cleanly.
  • Wedges - the real shot saving golf club, these are for short approaches usually under 110 yards, with the intention of getting the ball right by the hole. You can also use these golf clubs for getting out of trouble, for example from the rough or bunker.
  • Putter - probably the most commonly used golf club in your bag, getting a putter you like can be the difference between a round of 80 and a round of 100. Drive for show - put for dough. No matter how well you play a given golf club, if you put badly, you will almost certainly score badly. Used once you are on the green, or from just off it.
